Festivals in Mathura & Vrindavan

The single most sacred, grand and emotionally charged festival in the entire Hindu world. Mathura is where Lord Krishna incarnated in Kansa’s prison cell at the stroke of midnight 5,200+ years ago. Across Mathura and Vrindavan, temples are transformed into celestial palaces with lakhs of flowers, 56 Bhog offerings, and non-stop 24-hour Harinaam Sankirtan.

Centuries-old living tradition reenacting Lord Krishna’s playful teasing of Shri Radha and the Gopis. The Gopis of Barsana playfully strike the men of Nandgaon (Huriyare) with decorated bamboo lathis, while the men defend themselves with leather shields amidst showers of natural herbal gulal, tesu flower colors and Samaj Gayan.

Celebrated on Rangbharni Ekadashi at the world-renowned Banke Bihari Temple. Unlike chemical color play, priests shower several quintals of fresh marigold petals, rose petals, lotus flowers, and scented herbal chandan directly from the sanctum upon the gathered devotees.

Braj is the only place on Earth where Holi is celebrated for 40 continuous days, starting with the installation of the Holi Danda on Basant Panchami. The festival culminates in legendary events like Gokul Chhadimar Holi, Vrindavan Widow Holi, Mathura Holika Dahan, and Baldeo Dauji Huranga.

In Braj Mandal, Shri Radha Rani is revered as the Supreme Queen and the soul of Lord Krishna. Radhashtami (15 days after Janmashtami) is celebrated with unmatched tenderness and grandeur in Barsana (her home) and Rawal (her village of appearance). Devotees sing special badhai songs and partake in divine Chhathi feasts.

Commemorating the cosmic leela where 7-year-old Krishna lifted the colossal Govardhan Hill on his little finger for 7 days to protect Braj from Indra’s torrential rains. Hundreds of thousands of devotees complete the 21-km barefoot Parikrama around Giriraj Ji while temples offer towering mountains (Annakut) of grain, sweets, curries and butter.

The most mystically charged night of the entire Braj calendar. According to the Srimad Bhagavatam, on this autumnal full moon night, Lord Krishna sounded his divine flute and danced the Maha Raas with Radha and the Gopis under the luminous moonlight. On this single night of the year, Banke Bihari holds a flute and wears a special crown (Mukut).

The holiest 30 days in Vaishnavism, dedicated to Lord Damodar (Krishna bound with ropes of love by Mother Yashoda). Devotees from all over the world observe the Kartik Vrat in Vrindavan, doing daily morning Yamuna bath, evening Deepdan (offering clay lamps), chanting the Damodarashtakam prayer, and walking the 10-km Vrindavan Parikrama.

Diwali in Mathura and Vrindavan is an otherworldly experience. Millions of clay lamps shimmer across all 25 Yamuna ghats in Mathura, while ISKCON Vrindavan’s grand altar is lit with pure ghee lamps. Prem Mandir hosts a mesmerizing light and fountain choreography, creating a luminous wonderland.

Celebrated during the romantic monsoon rains of Shravana. Deities of Radha Krishna are seated upon intricately carved golden, silver and floral swings (Hindolas) and gently swung by priests while devotees sing classical Braj Jhulan songs in Raga Malhar.

A massive 500-year-old tradition commemorating the disappearance day of Shrila Sanatana Goswami. Devotees shave their heads (Mudia) and perform the 21-km Govardhan Parikrama. Over 70 to 80 lakh pilgrims descend on Govardhan over 5 days, turning the entire town into a sea of singing pilgrims.

Marks the onset of Spring (Vasant Ritu) and the official start of the 40-day Braj Holi season. The entire town turns yellow as devotees wear yellow clothing and offer yellow mustard flowers and marigolds. At Banke Bihari Temple, priests offer the first pinch of sacred gulal on the deity’s cheek.

According to Srimad Bhagavatam, on this day young Krishna and Balarama were officially entrusted by Nanda Maharaj to graze the adult cows instead of calves. Devotees across Braj bathe cows, decorate their horns with turmeric and peacock feathers, and feed them jaggery, fresh fodder and sweets.

Yamuna Maharani is revered as the Fourth Queen of Krishna and the divine sister of Yamaraj (Lord of Death). On Bhai Dooj (Yam Dwitiya), brothers and sisters take a sacred hand-in-hand dip at Vishram Ghat Mathura, believing it frees them from fears of untimely death and grants eternal fraternal protection.

Marks the divine awakening of Lord Vishnu from his 4-month cosmic slumber (Chaturmas). It triggers the grand Tulsi Vivah (marriage of Holy Basil with Lord Shaligram) and serves as the auspicious starting date for the traditional barefoot Braj 84 Kos Parikrama.

The day following Janmashtami, commemorating the joy of Nanda Baba and Mother Yashoda celebrating Krishna’s birth. The entire village of Gokul goes into ecstasy, throwing turmeric, curd and saffron water over each other in celebration.
