Sacred Story & Temple Overview

Shri Radha Vallabh Mandir is one of the most ancient and spiritually powerful temples in Vrindavan . It is counted among the seven main temples (Sapt Devalaya) of Vrindavan and represents the purest form of devotion to Radha Rani .

The Sacred Story

The temple was built in 1585 AD by Sundardas Bhatnagar, a disciple of Shri Vanachandra (son of Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu) . Sundardas worked under Abdul Rahim Khankhana at Akbar's court. He received royal permission to use red sandstone for the temple – a material usually reserved for palaces and forts. He also got financial help from Akbar himself .

There is an interesting legend behind this temple. King Maan Singh first planned to build it. But he heard a prophecy – "whoever builds this temple will die within a year" – so he backed out . Sundardas went ahead anyway. Sadly, the legend came true. He died soon after completing the temple .

The Deity Story

According to popular belief, the deity Radha Vallabh was never made by any sculptor . Lord Shiva himself gave this idol to a devotee named Atmadev as a blessing for his devotion . Later, Goddess Radha herself ordered Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu to marry Atmadev's daughters and bring the idol to Vrindavan. And that's how the deity came here .

What Makes This Temple Different?

No Idol of Radha

This temple has a unique tradition. There is no physical idol of Radha Rani inside . Instead, a crown is placed next to Lord Krishna to show her presence . This symbolizes that Radha and Krishna have two bodies but one soul . The name "Radha Vallabh" means "the beloved of Radha" or "the one who pleases Radha" .

Radha is Supreme

The temple belongs to the Radha Vallabh Sampradaya founded by Hith Harivansh Mahaprabhu . This tradition believes Radha Rani is the highest deity. Even the local greeting "Radhe Radhe" reflects this Radha-first devotion .

It is believed that only devotees with pure hearts and true devotion can get the divine darshan of the deity. Those with sinful thoughts cannot experience the Lord's presence .

Architecture

The temple is a perfect blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture .

Feature Detail
Material Red sandstone (royal permission)
Wall Thickness 10 feet thick
Special Feature Trifolium gallery (Mughal style) + Nave (rare in temples)
Style Hindu-Mughal fusion – very unique
